The wait is finally over. The San Jose Sharks will select first in the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas on June 28. The Sharks, who at 18.5 percent had the best chance of winning the lottery, will pick No. 1 for the first time in their history.
The consensus number one overall pick is Macklin Celebrini of Boston University, whose father Rick, works for the Golden State Warriors as their Director of Sports Medicine & Performance.
Macklin played for the Junior Sharks and is the youngest player to win the Hobey Baker Award at the age of 17. Celebrini had 64 points this season (32 goals & 32 assists).
The highest the Sharks have ever picked was number two, which they have done three times when they took Pat Falloon in 1991, Andrei Zyuzin 1996 and Patrick Marleau 1997.
One thing to note, Celebrini could be drafted number one overall and decide to stay in college. Many former number one picks in recent history have immediately gone pro however. The Sharks also have the opportunity to keep the 14th pick, which they acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Erik Karlsson trade.
The Sharks are currently still search for a new head coach. Stay tuned for updates as they come!
