The 2024 NHL Entry Draft is 16 days away and we can assume that the San Jose Sharks will select Macklin Celebrini with the first pick. This will be the first time in Sharks history they have the first overall pick.
We at the Forgotten Sports wanted to start a countdown leading to June 28 at the Sphere in Las Vegas looking back at the best picks, if applicable, in Sharks history at the number of days remaining before the draft.
Today we look back at the two players selected at number 16 by Team Teal. Steve Bernier and Ty Wishart. Starting with the latter, Wishart played in 26 games in the NHL with the Lightning and the Islanders, tailing five total points (one goal and four assists).
Wishart was traded on July 4, 2008, with a first-round draft pick in 2009 (later traded to Ottawa, later traded to NY Islanders, later traded to Columbus, later traded to Anaheim - Anaheim selected Kyle Palmieri), 4th round draft pick in 2010 (James Mullin) and Matt Carle to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich.
Steve Bernier played three seasons with the Sharks, totaling 81 points (42 goals and 39 assists) from 2005-2008 before he was sent to the Buffalo Sabres with a 2008 first-round pick, which turned into Tyler Ennis for Brian Campbell and a 2008 seventh-round pick. Bernier went on to 637 games in the NHL and accumulated 230 points.
Dan Boyle went on to have a nice career for the Sharks, but Wishart and Bernier didn’t produce much for Team Teal! Stay tuned for the best pick in Sharks history at number 14 as the team never had a pick at 15!
